Regis reported a mixed start to fiscal 2027: overall same-store sales edged higher, led by Supercuts, but revenue and profit were below the year-earlier quarter. The salon operator also said it repaid debt and generated positive operating cash for an eighth consecutive quarter.
The company is postponing a refinancing for now, saying it expects better value for shareholders after a scheduled reduction in the call premium on its existing debt in mid-2027. Regis expects to return to debt markets early next calendar year.
Key details
- Revenue declined: First-quarter revenue was $54.3 million, down $4.7 million from $59.0 million a year earlier. Regis attributed the decline primarily to lower franchise rental income, which it described as non-margin income, and lower revenue from company-owned salons.
- Sales trends diverged by salon type: Consolidated same-store sales increased 0.2%. Supercuts rose 2.0%, while company-owned salons declined 1.1%. Regis said weaker guest traffic at company-owned salons needs attention and that it is taking targeted steps to increase traffic across its brands.
- Profit was lower, while adjusted net income was flat: Operating income fell to $5.3 million from $5.9 million, and net income declined to $0.5 million from $1.4 million. Diluted earnings per share were $0.18, compared with $0.49. Adjusted net income was $1.4 million in both periods; adjusted diluted EPS was $0.48 versus $0.50.
- Cash generation and debt reduction continued: Regis reported $7.7 million in adjusted EBITDA and positive cash from operations for the eighth consecutive quarter. It repaid about $7.9 million of debt during the quarter and ended September with $20.8 million in cash.
- Refinancing is deferred: Regis reviewed options including bank debt, private credit, preferred equity and whole-business securitization, with Board oversight and involvement from a recently appointed director who is a significant shareholder. The company concluded that refinancing now would not provide sufficient shareholder value, given the expected decline in the call premium on its existing debt in mid-2027. It expects to continue making scheduled debt repayments and generating cash in the meantime, then return to debt markets early in calendar 2027.
Plain-English implications
Regis is reducing debt and maintaining positive operating cash flow, but the quarter also showed weaker revenue, profit and sales at company-owned salons. The refinancing decision leaves the existing debt in place for now; management’s stated plan is to keep making scheduled repayments and revisit financing after the call-premium reduction.
