India Daily Policy Brief

India’s Latest Public Service and Infrastructure Updates

A roundup of changes to provident fund services, coal supply, navigation and air travel, alongside new rail, logistics, civic, dairy and fisheries projects.

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY:

Provident fund members gain WhatsApp access and automatic payouts

Members can use EPFO’s verified WhatsApp service to check balances and recent transactions. The agency will also automatically pay eligible, Aadhaar-verified dormant accounts with balances up to ₹1,000—covering about one lakh accounts.

Coal imports fall as domestic supply hits records

Coal imports were down 5.8% in August from a year earlier, while Coal India reported record production and deliveries in October. The figures suggest less need for imported coal in power generation, though steelmakers still rely on imported coking coal.

India launches third next-generation navigation satellite

The NVS-03 satellite has been launched to expand India’s NavIC navigation system; further orbit-raising manoeuvres are underway. More reliable home-grown navigation signals could support transport, farming, disaster response and other services.

International Digi Yatra trials begin at seven airports

Eligible Indian e-passport holders can test paperless identity checks on select international flights at seven airports through December. Feedback will guide a possible wider rollout in 2027.

Bengaluru-Mumbai overnight sleeper train begins service

The new train links the two cities six days a week, with stops across Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra. It gives business travellers, students and others a modern overnight option and improves access for towns along the route.

New logistics park aims to cut Vidarbha export costs

A 150-acre logistics park and dry port is being developed near Sindi Railway in Maharashtra to move regional goods to ports and overseas markets. The project aims to cut the stated cost of moving a container from ₹1.5 lakh to ₹1 lakh.

Chandigarh commits ₹258 crore to civic projects

The package covers education, healthcare, justice, administration, research and innovation, including a ₹68-crore bus depot and ₹68-crore police housing. Some projects were opened while others had their foundations laid.

New dairy and fisheries projects planned in Sikkim

Planned initiatives include new dairy cooperatives, a milk-testing lab and fishery projects worth ₹3.75 crore. They aim to expand farmer access to services, improve product tracking and support higher-value markets.

DETAILED NOTES:

Provident fund members gain WhatsApp access and automatic payouts

What happened:

  • EPFO’s verified WhatsApp service offers access to provident fund balances, the five most recent transactions and passbook information.
  • Eligible dormant accounts with Aadhaar-verified identity, verified bank details and balances up to ₹1,000 will be settled automatically.
  • About one lakh accounts, holding a total of ₹5 crore, are expected to benefit.

Why it matters:

  • Members can check basic account information without visiting an EPFO office.
  • Automatic settlement could help people recover small balances they might otherwise leave unclaimed.

Coal imports fall as domestic supply hits records

What happened:

  • Coal imports fell to 104.57 million tonnes in August 2026, down 5.83% from August 2025. Imports for blending at domestic power plants dropped by 35.23%.
  • Coal India reported record October production of 67.2 million tonnes and record total deliveries of 70.3 million tonnes, up 19% year on year.
  • Coal India’s deliveries to the power sector also hit a monthly record of 57.1 million tonnes.

Why it matters:

  • Higher domestic output and deliveries may reduce the power sector’s need for imported coal.
  • Steelmakers remain exposed to overseas supply: India’s coking coal imports fell only 4.18%, and domestic reserves do not fully meet the sector’s requirements.

India launches third next-generation navigation satellite

What happened:

  • The NVS-03 satellite was launched on 30 October and placed into a transfer orbit. Orbit-raising manoeuvres were still in progress in the latest update.
  • It is the third of five planned next-generation satellites for NavIC, India’s regional satellite navigation system.
  • The satellite carries signals in three frequency bands, including L1, and an Indian-made atomic clock.

Why it matters:

  • The satellite is intended to improve NavIC’s coverage, accuracy and reliability, reducing dependence on foreign navigation systems for some uses.
  • Potential applications include transport, aviation, farming, disaster response and maritime operations.

International Digi Yatra trials begin at seven airports

What happened:

  • Trials run from November to December at Delhi, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Cochin, Mumbai, Chennai and Amritsar airports.
  • Eligible Indian e-passport holders can use a digital identity credential at selected airport entry, security and boarding points on some Air India and IndiGo international flights.
  • Passengers must still carry travel documents and complete immigration and airline checks. Feedback will inform plans for a wider rollout in 2027.

Why it matters:

  • The trial tests whether digital identity checks can make airport processing smoother for international passengers.
  • Access is limited for now to eligible Indian citizens with e-passports and flights covered by the trial.

Bengaluru-Mumbai overnight sleeper train begins service

What happened:

  • The train runs six days a week between Bengaluru and Mumbai, stopping at cities including Anantapur, Raichur, Kalaburagi, Solapur and Pune.
  • It leaves Bengaluru in the evening and reaches Mumbai the following day; the return journey also runs overnight.
  • Railways also said a Bengaluru-Mangaluru service is expected to start in the coming weeks, subject to testing.

Why it matters:

  • The new service offers an additional overnight option between two major business centres.
  • Stops along the route improve access to rail services for regional towns as well as the two cities.

New logistics park aims to cut Vidarbha export costs

What happened:

  • A 150-acre logistics park and dry port is being developed near Sindi Railway in Maharashtra, with public-sector involvement from the national highways logistics company and Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority.
  • Planned facilities include cold storage, warehouses and a customs office. The site is intended to help move products such as cotton, textiles, oranges and vegetables to ports and export markets.
  • The project says container transport costs could fall from ₹1.5 lakh to ₹1 lakh. A first rail shipment of Maruti cars has already begun operating from the site.

Why it matters:

  • Lower transport costs and easier access to ports could improve export prospects for producers in Vidarbha.
  • Cold storage and cargo consolidation could also help regional businesses move goods more efficiently.

Chandigarh commits ₹258 crore to civic projects

What happened:

  • Chandigarh announced a ₹258-crore package spanning education, healthcare, justice, administration, research and innovation.
  • A ₹68-crore city bus depot and ₹68-crore housing for police personnel were among the projects opened; foundations were also laid for other projects.
  • The announcement did not provide a full breakdown of the remaining package.

Why it matters:

  • The bus depot and housing are direct investments in transport facilities and police accommodation.
  • The wider package directs public spending across several local services and facilities.

New dairy and fisheries projects planned in Sikkim

What happened:

  • Dairy plans include a microbiology lab for the Sikkim Milk Union, initiatives to establish 57 new dairy cooperatives, and traceability for Churpi cheese.
  • Fisheries plans include projects worth ₹3.75 crore under the national fisheries programme, a new procedure for organic fish farming, and credit cards for fish farmers.
  • The announcements were linked to a ministerial visit scheduled for 2–3 November.

Why it matters:

  • Cooperatives and testing facilities could help dairy farmers organise supply and improve product quality.
  • Organic production, traceability and fisheries infrastructure may help local producers reach higher-value markets.
