National Bankshares issued an investor update covering its third-quarter and first-nine-month results through Sept. 30, 2026. The Virginia community bank reported higher earnings and a wider net interest margin than a year earlier, citing lower deposit costs and improved yields on loans and securities.
The presentation also detailed a securities portfolio repositioning completed in the second quarter, which the bank says is contributing to further margin improvement.
Key details
- Third-quarter earnings rose year over year. Net income was $5.49 million, up from $4.42 million a year earlier. Diluted earnings per share increased to 86 cents from 69 cents.
- Interest income and margin improved. Third-quarter net interest income was $13.85 million, compared with $11.67 million in Q3 2025. Net interest margin rose to 3.21% from 2.72% a year earlier and from 3.00% in the second quarter.
- Year-to-date results were stronger. For the first nine months of 2026, net income reached $15.50 million, up 55.84% from $9.95 million. Diluted EPS was $2.43, compared with $1.56. Net interest income increased 20.07% to $39.52 million from $32.92 million.
- The bank’s efficiency ratio improved. It was 55.90% in the third quarter, versus 58.75% a year earlier. For the first nine months, the ratio was 58.04%, down from 62.72%. A lower ratio indicates less expense relative to revenue.
- A second-quarter securities shift is feeding through to results. National Bankshares bought $127.33 million of mortgage-backed securities yielding an average 5.26%, while selling securities with an average yield of 1.80%. The bank estimates the additional interest income will offset the realized loss on the transaction in about 1.8 years.
- The bank’s projections for that shift include $4.25 million of additional annual interest income, a 12-basis-point lift to 2026 net interest margin and a 24-basis-point lift in 2027. Those estimates are based on balance-sheet composition, expected cash flows and interest-rate assumptions as of June 30, and actual results may differ.
- Early results showed higher securities yields. The taxable securities yield increased 54 basis points from Q2 to Q3, while net interest margin rose 21 basis points quarter over quarter.
- The company’s scale and footprint: At Sept. 30, National Bankshares had $1.78 billion in assets, $1.58 billion in deposits and $1.02 billion in gross loans. It operated 28 full-service branches and one loan production office across Southwestern, Western and Central Virginia.
Plain-English implications
The reported improvement in earnings and margin reflects both lower deposit costs and higher asset yields. The securities repositioning is part of that yield improvement, though the bank’s stated payback period and future margin benefits are estimates rather than guaranteed outcomes.
